Nelson Mandela

1918 - Was born in Mvezo, Transkei

1925 - Primary School - his teacher, Qunu, gave Nelson his name

1930 - Father passed away

1937 - Attends Healtown, the Wesleyon Collage at Fort Beaufort

1939 - The University Collage at Fort Hare in Alice

1940 - Expelled

1941/1943 - Arrived in Johannesburg

1944 - Married, Evelyn Ntoka Mase

1943/1949 - Studied Law and formed the ANC Youth League

1950/1954 - Elected President of the ANCYL

1961/1962 - African tour

1962 - Arrested

1963 - Sent to Roben Island

1982 - Pollsmoor Prison

1988/1990 - Victor Vester Prison and release

1994 - Elected president of South Africa

1999 - Stepped down from presidency

2001 - Diagnosed with prostate cancer

2013 - Passed away

Turning Points:

He established South Africa's first black law practice in 1952. His practice primarily worked in challenging apartheid laws. His activism continued while in prison. He was a mentor to other prisoners and taught them about non-violent resistance. 

Fred Hollows

1929 - was born in Dunedin, New Zealand

1942 - went to North East Primary School

1958 - Married first wife, Mary Skiller

1961 - Studied Opthalmology

1965 - Did postgraduate work/moved to Australia/ became an associate professor

1965/1992 - Was chair of Opthalmology . Took care of the department of UNSW, Prince of Wales and Prince Henry hospital.

1980 - Married second wife, Gabi Hollows

1989 - Diagnosed with cancer

1992 - Travelled to Vietnam

1993 - Died

1994 - Fred Hollows Foundation was formed

Turning Points:


Growing up he always wanted to become a missionary. After doing some charity work he decided to dedicate his life to medical eye reasonss and enrolled himself into Otago Medical School

Achievements:


 - 1990 - The title of Australian of the Year award.

- He received an Award for Aboriginal Eye Care

- Awarded the Human Rights Medal

- Advance Australia Award for MEdicine and Overseas Aid

- Awarded Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa, UNSW

- Admitted as Doctor of Medicine Honories Causa at UNSW

- Named Eritica's first honorary citizen.

1934 - Got a part time job and published his first novel.

1935 - Published another novel

1937 - Published 'The Road to Wigan Pier'

1938 - Published 'A Homage to Catalonia'. Started suffering from Tuberculosis

1939 - Published 'Coming Up for Air' novel.

1949 - Published his masterpiece '1984'/Married second wife Sonia

1950 - Passed away

Turning Points:

George Orwell grew dissatisfied and he resigned in 1927. He decided to become a writer. He also began living among the poor.
